Next to my love for God, my family, and church, my passion is bowhunting. I hunt in the Western US, Midwest US, South US, Canada, and Africa. I have taken hundreds of animals and dozens of different species of game with a bow.
I use a Bowtech SR6, QAD Ultra MXT Rest, Black Gold Ascent Sight, Spot Hogg Wiseguy Release, Bishop Mammoth arrows, QAD Exodus, Bishop Archery, Afflictor, Sevr, and Iron Will Broadheads, Kifaru Pack, Zeiss Conquest HD Binoculars, Leica Rangefinder, Kuiu Clothing, and Cold Steel Blades.

IRON WILL WIDE SINGLE BEVEL 125 gr BROADHEAD TEST
This is a test of the 125 gr Wide Single Bevel Broadhead by Iron Will.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 17 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a score of 22. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 16.03 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125" = 5.95 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.125”=5.95 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.375" = 4.125 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 19.72 pts)
Initial sharpness 9%, 107 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts +.93 bonus = 9.93 pts & Edge Retention (9%, +34 grams = 9.32/10 = 8.39 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10= 1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 16.75 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (8" = 8.89 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score. (55 layers= 7.86 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.88 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.75/10 = 4.88 pt)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
Bonus:
+.55 pts Extra thick blades (.062")
TOTAL SCORE: 89.93 pts = 10 Golden Arrows (rounded up)
Price: $43.33/head

Does it have a practice head?
I've read in other threads how difficult it is to change out the blades; in addition to the heads accidentally opening in quivers. Obviously this wouldn't be part of your testing process. But could you please comment on this and your experiences using them? I don't want to switch out my quiver (kwikee) just to accommodate them.
Not hunting if you have to bait
Unbelievable how it held up against that cinder block 😮
Thanks looks like a great broadhead
Great video but the deep breathes are SO BAD… man if you don’t want to spend the 2 hours removing them, get a kid on fiver to go through and take them all out.
I got my first deer with the 100gn ones. Nice video! I think you might need to work on your tape measure skills a bit though 👍
Seems like a similar design to the Wasp Sharpshooter 200. Would love to see those put to the test.
My credit score isnt high enough to get my hands on these heads 😂 nice video
I understand. All of our budgets are different & these prices don't fit with most people. But there are some amazing heads that are quite inexpensive. I try to present both on my channel and let the scores & performance speak for themselves--like Crimson Talon Crocs or Cleavers.
Been watching EBay for any Iron Will’s but it’s rare to find someone “willing” to sell theirs. Maybe that speaks to their quality? 🏹
Yep. Occasionally I see them on Archery Talk for sale.
John you definitely can see the quality! Very very sharp! I still .Ike the crimson talon SB for the $$
Yep. Well said of both heads.
Great video John!
Thank you!
Great head to use
Yep
What would your elk broadhead be going into the 2024 season? Im still shooting the original slick trick and thinking about changing it up.
Those are great heads. On my last moose hunt, I had both Sevr 1.5s and Iron Will Single Bevels in my quiver. The Sevrs were for long shots, long follow up shots, windy shots or broadside shots. The Iron Wills were for quartering or frontal shots. With elk, I like that same flexibility, as most situations fit into those two broadhead's strengths. I've also loved Exodus for elk...fly great, penetrate very well, larger cut, and super tough.
Every broadhead you ever tested will blow through a deers vitals n ribs with a tuned bow at proper range for that bow fyi to everyone who thinks you need $100 broadhead to be successful
:)
I'm curious why you shoot the broadheads into concrete. Any metal that can withstand that will have properties that make it suboptimal for cutting through tissue and bone.
Well, honestly, that is just not true. If you look at the incredible sharpness of this iron will, for example. And you see the A2 tool steel it’s made out of. And it did very well with the concrete. Why would you say that is sub optimal? The type of steel that’s used in a broadhead is only one factor affecting durability. The way it is hardened alsoaffects it. And the geometric design also affects the structural integrity tremendously. So the concrete test is a good test to see if and how a Broadhead may fail on a very hard impact. If it can handle that, just imagine how well it could handle an animal. That being said, the concrete test only accounts for 3% of the total score. I certainly don’t consider it a pass fail test for a Broadhead. But if I have to choose one, Broadhead that can handle a shot into cinderblock, and one that cannot. All other things equal, I know which one I’ll choose for my hard earned shot on an animal.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Well said. It seems to me toughness and hardness would be serious factors when hitting strong bones.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures This is due to the tradeoffs present in the metallurgy and geometry. A very novice approach to think of blade design is that if it can withstand an extreme test then it should excel at its intended use. A good book worth reading is "Knife Engineering" by Dr. Larrin Thommas. For the metallurgy component, there is a tradeoff between hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Even when you have a nice mid-grade steel like A2, the heat treating processes can either maximize hardness or toughness, not both. If you increase the toughness to go beyond the intended use of the blade, it will have lower hardness. The same is true if you did an extreme test for corrosion resistance. If you were to soak it in vinegar for a month and expect no spots of rust, you would need an extremely high-alloy steel with very poor edge retention qualities. Likewise with the geometry. To survive the concrete test, it needs a very wide primary grind and working edge. Edge geometry has an even bigger effect on blade performance than the metallurgy does. That is why blades are designed with a grind angle to match the exact task it will be used for. When blades are designed to pass a test rather than designed to perform the intended task, they perform more poorly as a result.
@@MatthewC137 There is a tradeoff between hardness and toughness. It is toughness that allows the blade to withstand impacts. Remember, though, that animal bones do nowhere near as much damage to a blade as concrete will. A harder metal with a finer grind angle will penetrate better through tissue and bone, but will crack when fired into concrete.
@@ThirdLawPair Yes, toughness and hardness are different things and it looks like Iron Will struck a good balance between the two.
That new sevr hybrid is going to be a tough head to beat
That is a really good broadhead. There will be a lot of animals taken with it.
How do i send you a cho mo for your penatration test
I have some Single Bevel Broadheads for you to test. I would love to send you 3. How do I do so? Thanks John.
Thank you. Pls make sure I've not tested them yet, or do not already have them in hand. You can email me at JohnLusk64@gmail.com or message me on Messenger or Instagram. My mailing address is 2502 Sun Grove Rd, Melissa, TX 75454.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Hello John. Thank you for responding. I assure you that you have not tested these. In fact I don't see absolutely anyone that has. They are in the mail on the way to me and I will send them to you personally. I will email you shortly with all of the info on them. Thank you! God Bless
Single bevel annihilator!!!
I've been wanting to test those too.
Is it just me, or was the spin test more true after all the testing ?
It’s just you
I saw that too.
Haha. Sometimes it is that way, cause wobble often comes from blades not seating properly. Usually, if I tighten them on, then take them off, then tighten them on.....many times, they spin true. After concrete, some are "well seated" :) But I thought these spun well before & after. But when I comment, I'm looking at the broadhead in front of me. The videos are much closer up and much larger, so things sometimes look different thru that magnification.
You’ve seen 1 iron will you’ve seen them all. They should be good , they never change much .
Yep...just different materials for the ferrules, and different geometries of the blades...but similar, branded design.
Excellent as usual john. Im not a fan of bleeders whatsoever. To ME, the entire point and purpose of SBs is maximum penetration and bleeders will hinder that
In my testing, both single bevel and double bevels penetrate the same. That's when I have the exact same heads with the same dimensions and tested under the same conditions with the same mediums. But single bevels can create a bit better entrance hole and breach bone a bit better, allowing the shaft to penetrate more deeply thereafter. A case can be made that double bevels penetrate better cause no forward energy is lost on rotation. I like bleeders, cause I've shot animals with 2 blades and just had a very small slit and thus little bloodletting.
Just ordered some Serv Hybrids with your code, thanks for the amazing work you do!
Nice. Thank you.
My 6 pack shipped today…!! Colorado in sept..!!!!
Nice. Depending on the shot distance, one option is to use the Wides for closer shots and the regulars for longer shots. I've carried both like that in the past.
They should add a 2.5" expandable single bevel blades behind the fixed head.
An Iron Will Hybrid would be very welcomed to some for sure.
You should add sound of a broadhead in flight to your testing. You could just put a microphone of some sort halfway between you and the target and then you could play the video of the broadhead flying by the microphone it would make for good UA-cam video as well as good data.
Thank you. I've considered that, and wish I could do it. The challenge is, I need a distance far enough for the sound of the shot and the sound of the impact to not be louder than the sound of the arrow whizzing by. 40 yards works for that. BUT I also need an indoor place where ambient noise is consistent month to month...there is way too much variation outdoors, at least where I am. And I can't drive an hour to the nearest indoor 40 yard range every time.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I get that. I saw a guy do it outdoors but he didn’t at night when it is much quieter and it worked quite well. Have you thought about using a Lab Radar to get the statistics on how different heads may affect different statistics?
So it’s damaged. I don’t see the benefit or even the performance of this head compared to a magnus.. I don’t see why spending the money for something that’s pretty. Are you going to do a test on an animal hide / bone in the future to show how broadheads perform?
I agree! And no he wont
It's all a function of price vs diminishing returns & individual budgets. The same could be said of many bows. Will the Sanlida kill animals just as well as the Hoyt? But many people prefer spending the money to get that incremental quality increase, just because it fits within their budget.
Yes low price bows will kill animals but the performance is clearly not the same as a hoyt or Mathew’s… thats kind of my point why buy an iron will when it doesn’t have any more benefits or performance then a magnus… which also has a lifetime warranty.
I would be afraid lose those heads I would have buy a Metal detector .
Hahah Dude I feel the same way. I always leave 1 at home. Luckily I have about 12 Crimson Talon Crocs 150 that shoot the exact same to fill my quiver.😅
Lol
Well then..... Magnus
True they are not cheap... but do you buy 2 packs and sharpen 20x or buy 2 packs of others 20x....
:)
Highly impressive head. This video is a great example of why gel and other solid media penetration tests don't reflect penetration on animals. As much as I love Sevr's, there is no way they will out penetrate an Iron Will wide on an animal even though they beat it in Lusk's test. (Various model Sever's out penetrated the IW on cardboard and gel)
Well, I agree in part. No homogenous test mediums can accurately replicate an animal, because animals have various mediums within them as well. This head has a fairly wide cut, with much greater surface area, and also thicker blades. That's creating greater friction and resisting penetration. In dryer mediums, like bone and hide and some tougher tissue, penetration will also be reduced by that friction. And a larger bevel like in the Sevr, often opens up a channel for the arrow shaft to pass thru more readily, compared to two blade predominant heads. But in more liquid based mediums, like bloody tissue, penetration will not be so hindered by those factors and heads like this may penetrate more effectively. It's a mixed bag.
Just put both in your quiver and enjoy life 🤷🏻♂️
It has been released!!🤩🤩🤩
:)
this is why I use Iron will single bevel heads been using iron will even before single bevels and will always use them. Ive never had one fail or break...
They are great heads.
Back as a kid in the 80's I used old bear single bevels that I could pick up at yard sales and shoot with my 45# Fred Bear recurve... took many raccoons and coyotes over the years until I "UPGRADED" to a compound and carbon arrows around 16 years of age... I still have and use that old wood laminate bow now I'm in mid 40s to take birds and small game with flu flu arrows and small game blunts... oh and my 70# compound shooting 685 grain arrow set up is awesome for taking ANY game in North America with confidence
did you ever lose one? that must hurt. i quite often lose my arrow on passthrough shots.
@@yourmomma2995 lost many... why I had to buy cheap used products... I was a kid...
Thank you for the info and testing. If I am going to spend that money on a broadhead. It's cool to see it tested
Thanks
Own this head love it 😍
Nice
Iron will broadheads are stellar! Did you receive the NAP Shockwaves?
Oh was that you? I just got them but didn't know who sent them! Thank you.
Oh, man! The shockwaves! The originals that had the bigger front tip were so nasty! I shot an antelope frontal with one years ago … endo ed it!
@@LuskArcheryAdventures yes sir! I had em sent from Amazon. Amazon has the 125 grain heads for $19. Happy testing brother! I’m gonna do some testing of my own this deer season!
the shockwaves wouldn't hold up from my crossbow at 350fps while shooting at my 3d deer target, same thing when i tried the steelhead XL's. it was kind of old and hard, but the blades broke when they hit that target.
These are in order!!!
Nice.
Would love to see a total single bevel showdown unbiased just all side by side comparison
Thank you. My testing is consistent with every head I test...so any heads can be compared to any others, by watching the videos or reading the scores in the video description. The challenge with single bevels is there are SO MANY variations in them, all providing different strengths and weaknesses. Smaller diameters penetrate more deeply, but don't cut as much tissue. Slighter bevel angles penetrate better but don't rotate as much. Thicker blades rotate better and are more durable but don't penetrate as much...etc. It's nice to have the options to best suit your needs.
Sevr never disappoints
Very true.
Just ordered the 1.5 hybrid 100gr to try with my 4mm Easton long range arrows
Good choice.
Iron will came out with the wide single bevel in 100 and 125 grain if you could test them soon. I’m wondering if them cutting the weight effect the durability.
All done. It's posting Monday, July 1, at 11:00am
Hey man thanks for your great reviews. After being inspired by your videos I decided to use the sevr 1.5 on a nice bull moose in northern Ontario last year. I’m heading back up this year. After your testing would you lean towards these new hybrids instead of the 1.5s for a large animal like a moose?
Good question. It largely depends on your set up and shot distance. It takes more oomph to drive it deeply. If your goal is maximum penetration, the 1.5 is best. If you have plenty of momentum, then the 1.5 Hybrid would be great.
Thanks. The last moose was a 51” I hit him with my compound at 20yds and 50yds. Dropped in front of my eyes within 30 seconds. Neither shot passed through but lodged in the hide on his opposite side.
They should make the whole tip a small single bevel.
What is your thought on what that would accomplish?
@LuskArcheryAdventures honestly I have no idea. Maybe best of both worlds. Bevel the mechanical blades too. Do not know until you try.
This bow seems a lot like the Elites Kure. I wonder how they compare.
I know the draw cycle would be very different...the draw on this was fairly harsh.
Anyone else having problems ordering these??
You shouldn't. If you do, please call their customer service. They have great customer service. And you can enter my Discount Code: LUSKFIVE as you place the order.
Completely off topic but where did you get the shirt you had on?
It's a Kuiu Shirt. You can order them on their website.
You gotta do some hog hunts testing heads. That would give us more info
Man, I want to sooo bad. I did some in March...but then had a huge emergency back surgery in May. 2 nerves were so damaged that I can still barely use my right quadricep, and it's now July. I'm getting PT and slowing improving. But I have a second surgery in mid August. UGH! I have to have a buddy shoot my bow and arrows to do the new tests.
Can’t wait to try them!
:)
Sevr order complete! LUSKFIVE discount RULES! 🥳
Man I appreciate and respect your testings. Your testings is what pushed me towards sevr’s. Between my son, daughter and myself we harvested a lot of deer last year with our crossbows using sevr’s. Great blood trails. We love them and ill never shoot anything else
That's great to hear. I used them with a crossbow a month ago on hogs and they worked excellently--they fly SOOO well.
You just made my day… once again! 😂 I’M ordering these as soon as I can to add to my Hyde’s that I also ordered thanks to you, In our previous correspondence I said I love the Sevrs performance but just not comfortable with a 2 blade after years of 2 blade sub performance IMO over many years of use with my traditional bows, next thing I know, SUPRISE, here is Sevr with a 4 blade, that makes them near perfect in an imperfect world! Once again, thanks so much for your channel! God Bless! 😃
Nice. Thanks for the comment. Good luck!
Glad to hear that. Thank you for sharing that. Good luck.
